"Three Companions" Abstract Sculpture by Daryl Stokes Three polished redwood geometric forms rise boldly from a massive base structure interacting with three other organic redwood burl components. At a certain viewing angle, you might possibly see impressions of an elephant's head, a lioness head and below them, a curious animal figure with an entended arm. The sharply angled facets provide deep contrasts with the contorted organic natural redwood burls. This abstract sculpture has been composed with individual redwood burls which have been carved with chain saws, shaped with grinders and hand crafted to further enhance the forms. The wood components have been sprayed with a durable clear oil producing a matt finish which enhances all the natural colors and grain patterns. Due to the inherent nature of the wood, each sculpture is totally unique and cannot be duplicated. All of the natural redwood used to create these sculptures has been salvaged from fallen trees which have been victimized from winter storms, landslides or forest fires, therefor no living trees have been utilized. For optimial appreciation, the sculpture placement should allow for 360 degree viewing, as each perspective reveals the changing aspects of the sculpture's personality.
