"The Precipice" Abstract Redwood Sculpture by Daryl Stokes Abstract Redwood sculpture with energetic burl protrusions interacting vigorously with their polished geometric counterparts to create a sinuous obelisk structure with several distinct cascading tiers similar to mountain cliffs. The top of the precipice is the most profound component with tilting sheer angles and sharp overhanging edges. The smooth angular components contrast distinctly from the rugged burlwood forms providing an intriguing visual experience. Observing this sculpture from different positions will reveal surprisingly new characteristics with each perspective. This abstract redwood sculpture has been composed with individual redwood burls which have been carved with chain saws, shaped with grinders and hand crafted to further enhance the forms. The wood components have been sprayed with a durable clear oil and hand rubbed, producing a matt finish which enhances all the natural colors and exotic grain patterns. Due to the inherent characteristics of redwood burl, each sculpture is totally unique and cannot be duplicated. All of the natural redwood used to create these sculptures has been reclaimed from the underground portions of fallen trees which have been victimized from winter storms, landslides or forest fires, therefor no living trees have been utilized.
