The Care and Maintenance for Redwood Sculptures
The components of these redwood sculptures have been created with actual redwood root and tree trunk materials which are solid wood and extremely durable. After the individual forms have been assembled with 1/2 inch steel bars, the wood surfaces have been treated with a natural clear oil finish to enhance the redwood colors and burl grain patterns. For general cleaning purposes you may use a vacume cleaner with brush attachment or feather duster. The oil finish is water resistant and you may also use a damp cloth or even spray the surfaces with water for thorough cleaning in the burl cavities. If you decide to spray the surfaces with water, be sure to dry the areas with a soft cloth or air blower soon afterwards so that water does not pool and possibly create blemishes to the wood surfaces.
Depending on your climate conditions, the sculpture may need to be re-oiled periodically in order to restore the wood luster and rich colorations. If the sculpture wood appears to be dry or faded you may simply re-apply Watco Natural Danish Oil or Thompson's Water Seal either by brushing or spraying the surfaces. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions. Also, do not use furniture spray wax or paste wax as these products will be incompatabile with the existing oil finish. Minor scratches and chips can easily be repaired by lightly sanding the area and applying oil with a fine brush or cloth. The redwood sculptures are suitable for indoor and outdoor settings. While indoor environments provide an optimal climate, for outdoor applications it is advised that the sculptures should be oiled more frequently-every 3 to 6 months depending on climate conditions and especially in hotter climates. This will help to prevent the wood surfaces from over drying and becoming sunbleached or grayed. In addition, winter climates and freezing temperatures may be detrimental to the wood surfaces and it is advised that the sculpture be protected from extended durations of freezing weather conditions. If you require any further advice or assistance, please contact us directly at Stohans@hughes.net and we will gladly assist you. We hope you will enjoy the ambient character of your unique redwood sculpture for many years!
