Presenting "Serviente Glass Studios" (Serviente Glass Studios)

"Serviente Glass Studios, nestled in the hills of upstate New York, has been making a line of kiln formed glass since 1990. We make vases, dishes, bowls, lamps and sculptural pieces. When we started in 1984 the emphasis was on Stained Glass. In the succeeding years this emphasis has shifted to the pursuit of kiln formed glass. Our constantly evolving line keeps us busy exploring the mysteries of the universe, or at least our tiny corner of it. "

Biography of Tony Serviente

I was born in 1956 in the mediocrity of suburban New Jersey, growing up within sight of the broken toothed skyline of New York City; I could almost hear the jazz blowing across the Hudson River. Surrounded as I was by shopping malls and power lines, I did what I had to do to survive, I developed interests, among them electronics, science fiction, music and Zen Buddhism. When the time was right and that was after high school, I joined the military to escape and to pursue my electronic interests. Four years later (with one of those being spent in Japan), I left the service with a solid feel for machines that ran on electricity. This took me into the realm of electronics field engineering, or to put it another way, I fixed things.

About twenty years or so ago, glass caught my interest and I took an adult ed. class that inspired me to pursue stained glass as a hobby. Four years later I quit my job as a computer medic to open a glass shop and devote myself to the pursuit of this medium. I built stained glass windows and lamps, taught beginners and sold supplies to hobbyists. Eleven years ago I went to the Pilchuck glass school in Washington state to learn new techniques that were the building blocks of what I do now. The kiln working skills that I learned have led me to the line of vases, dishes, bowls and sculptures that I make, as well as some more exotic shapes that I experiment with. It is exciting to be able to make so many creations from five simple ingredients: glass, heat, time, gravity, and experience. I feel I have just begun to explore the world of kiln fired glass and am still excited about delving into this glittering jungle.

My work is currently sold in fine craft shops and galleries throughout the United States and I have sent my glass to every continent except Antartica. The studio is in the heart of the Finger Lakes, amid dairy farms and rolling hills, and if you listen carefully, you will hear an occasional blast of my saxophone emanating from the shop.
